As a chemical manufacturing organisation, safety and environment audits are carried out regularly by both internal and external auditors. In CCAL, the safety system for the mitigation of toxic gas release is one of the best of its kind, and a state-of-the-art fully enclosed negative pressure system has been implemented for the entire Chlorine section.
CCAL conducted a HAZOP study with the help of CLRI in 1992, well before such studies became mandatory. In order to remain prepared, regular on-site mock drills are conducted as per statutes, and off-site mock drills are conducted in coordination with the District Collectorate.
CCAL has been implementing various initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and its carbon footprint.
The plant is surrounded by a vast green belt, with more than 70 percent of the property being green cover. This dense forest cover has increased by over 440 percent from 1990 to 2014, according to a TERI report, creating a vast carbon sink within the campus. Rainwater harvesting structures have been built over the entire 37 acre area, thus maximising the potential for rainwater harvesting within the campus.
Based on the various sustainability initiatives undertaken by CCAL over the years, the organisation prepared its first sustainability report in the year 2014-15 and continues to do so every year. These reports track and monitor environmental performance through carbon footprint studies, biodiversity impact assessments, life cycle analyses and energy audits. CCAL takes on the responsibility of fulfilling a sustainable mandate in the area and working towards achieving ambitious targets such as water positive, carbon neutral, and zero liquid discharge. We have also identified strategies to source raw materials via sustainable sources.
CCAL has implemented state-of-the-art technology for the online monitoring of effluents and emissions, and has planned a state-of-the-art two MLD seawater desalination plant to conserve ground-water.
CCAL has taken the initiative at every step along with the process to conserve electrical energy and tap renewable resources.
As a result of our efforts towards Process improvement, Safety, Health, Environment, Customer and Supply Chain management and CSR, CCAL has been permitted by the Indian Chemical Council to use the Responsible Care logo. This permission is for a period of three years starting from September 2017.
